WHISPERS

‘There was a hushed tone as Amelia entered the room. In that moment it was as if she were a watcher, observing as an invisible force. The word force made her smile. Everyone now knew the truth. The whispers were brought to life and somehow she had to navigate the new world she had just entered. She had never expected to be included in the will of her late aunt. Amelia wondered if her aunt knew the rumblings it would cause. Well, she would hold her head high and be the force for good her aunt always hinted she could be.’

The words above tumbled from my brain in the early hours and I rushed to write them down. I am guessing they were prompted by some family tree research I have been doing. When I was growing up if adults wanted to say anything they didn’t want children to hear they either sent you out or spoke in hushed tones. Knowing glances and nodding of heads always teasing the curious within me.

It seems like another world away and yet there are still times when there is a need to take a quiet moment to whisper to someone, somewhere. The contradiction of this is being taught it is rude to whisper. I guess it is seen as a way of spreading gossip and casting doubt on a person or a situation.

Yet for building a story it is a great tool to use. Murmuring quietly in the passageways, the hidden nooks in a garden. Men have been felled by such whispered words and the reputation of women have been discredited. Such danger and alarm in such a simple action.

Amelia’s story is still being nurtured in the shushing. Who knows what her force for good will be. I do know it will be a path she never expected. I think she will walk it carefully and seek help when she finds that one person who believes in her and she grows to trust.

The path we all walk now is uncertain and we crave some familiarity. It comforts us and makes us feel safe. As a writer I must guide my reader through the uncertainty of where my hero or heroine is headed. A journey fraught with hiccups and much shouting at the screen.

The sun is out today as I write and I am heartened to see my garden come alive. As my characters also come to life. Exciting not knowing the exact path Amelia will tread.

Stay safe out there.

Thanks for stopping by.
