Iris Murdoch said,
‘Starting a novel is opening a door on a misty landscape;you can see very little but you can smell the earth and feel the wind blowing.’

The photo above I took on a wild autumnal day some time ago. I love images which spark words so here are the words it sparked.
‘Ruby heard them before she saw them. The low drumming reverberating across the moor. Moor Riders! Appearing from the mist like black shadows, galloping astride their sleek black stallions.
Crouching in a dip, she pulled her shawl tightly, gripping her basket. If they found her it would be over. Her sacrifices would be for nothing.
The hoof beats were gaining ground. The earth beneath her trembled. Tears formed in the corner of her eyes. Another sound in contrast whistled through the pounding. Water. Turning slightly she notice a small cave where water was trickling through the opening. Scrambling along the edge of the broken stone wall, Ruby pushed herself in to the cave. Closing her jet black eyes, the earth shook and soil rained upon her as the riders descended.
‘Please let them pass.’ she whispered.
It is National Northern Authors day today, so it seemed appropriate to post this beginning.
I am unsure of the rest of Ruby’s story but it is lurking around. I am still busy with Edward and Olivia who are starting to find their voices.
Inspiration is all around us. In the landscape, the people, music, words. Wherever your inspiration comes from enjoy it and revel in it. It is the beating heart of what propels us forward.
Thanks for dropping by.
