Dancing in the Rain

Imagine this:

‘The inky night sky is beginning to fade, and the rise of bird song carries on the gentle breeze. A woman dressed in baggy tartan pyjamas and a shabby, well worn cardigan raises her hands. In a grand elaborate gesture to the skies, she dances and twirls without fear of any who may see her. Large droplets of rain are beginning to fall intermittently. Lifting her face she laughs joyously as they splatter across her face. Glancing around her, it is as if her little garden has suddenly come alive. It is as if at last she too has come to life.’

Our inspiration can come from the simplest things and a few days ago I found the hat in the photo above. It was like a wave washing over me. All the memories of the lady who wore it.

It’s raining today but in my heart, I hear the laughter of Teena who wore this hat. Anyone who met her would be drawn to her instantly by her warmth and love. I often wondered if she had a little power pack within her that radiated that love. Of course I understand now she was a naturally loving kind person. Saw little bad in people and always gave them the benefit of doubt. Until she learned otherwise.

Welcoming, and all embracing. When you were down she had words to lift you and food to comfort you. When you were up she celebrated the joy and carried you along on her own delight in seeing you happy.

There was a sadness though woven through her, life had not always been kind but she moved through it with grace and determination. Finding her hat reminded me of how we can live on. Through the transitions of life we can often forget what came before. Yet were it not for her grit, determination and firm belief nothing was impossible, I would not be here today.

So a new character has emerged for my follow on to Daisy in my yet to published novel. Elvira. A woman born before her time, struggling with secrets to keep.

Happy green hat day Mum. Love you always.
