A Beginning

I’m working on a story line based on the past charging into the present. I have been led by Edward, he is the male lead. The love of his life chose a different path and he was left. Broken and lost he found his way back and built a new life. Haunted by the past, he always wondered what it would be like to meet the only women he had ever really loved.
He gets his chance and so here is the beginning.
Caught in time, Ed eased himself up from the bench. Everything was happening in slow motion and his brain was stumbling over the words to utter.
‘Ellie? It really is you?’
Nodding, Ellie took a hesitant step forward.
Sadness brushed by him as he reached for her hand. He noticed how tiny and delicate it was. If things had turned out differently, this would have been his norm. Instead it felt like he was reaching for a ghost.
Taking his hand, she stood motionless. Each beset with the fear of what may happen next. Without warning the years fell away and they were in each others arms.
Edward’s story comes and goes within my head. It feels powerful because of the lives I imagine they have led. It reminds me of how on the turn of a coin, life can change and a moment can be lost that changes everything.
I like the idea of exploring what this means for Ed/Edward.
Writing is all about exploring the stories, the character. What do they do? How do they respond? In real life, I have learned that when faced with something you never react the way you would expect to when you imagine it. Yet in the evolving story it still needs to be believable. Though often real life can be stranger than fiction.
Hope you enjoyed the short read and thank you for reading.
More of Ed and Ellie next time.
